Why hire a company like SpeedEx for an international move? You want them for their expertise dealing with international customs. Unfortunately, this company has none. Feel free to use SpeedEx, but BE WARNED, they will just send your packages with UPS (which you could do yourself) and then leave you to the wolves.
I knew I could use UPS directly, however I wanted to make sure I dealt with US customs properly so I decided to go with SpeedEx. Everything went great at first- [name removed by Sirelo] told me what to do, what forms to fill out, and arranged UPS to pick up the packages which went great. I was promised: a delivery time of 2-4 business days and customs included.
Then exactly 1 nanosecond after I sent SpeedEx their payment (a bit over 6000 DKK), they completely stopped giving a crap.
To make a long story short, none of the customs forms were submitted properly, so the delivery was delayed by about 1 month. If I had known they were not submitted properly, I could have de
alt with it. However, the USA customs only contacted SpeedEx, who either did nothing, or sent me random out of context quotes from customs by email like 'we still are missing the documents' with no other instructions or contact information. After 1 month, I figured out the contact info for my package's UPS rep (they managed to email me directly), so I contacted UPS myself. They were very helpful, but wanted me to pay an additional $544 USD in warehouse fees due to the delay in getting the forms.
Since SpeedEx promised customs were included, I contacted them to complete the payment. They refused, and said the fees were 'import taxes.' (They weren't). After some back and forth in which they insisted they were 'import taxes,' I gave up. I called UPS and explained the situation and they very graciously waived the fees. (Honestly, I had great experiences with UPS customer service, I should have just used them from the beginning!) For the record, the fee was not and never was an import tax, SpeedEx was either genuinely confused (incompetent) or trying to trick me to avoid paying themselves (malicious).
Ultimately, I don't believe SpeedEx is malicious, but I really don't understand why they exist. I filled out all the forms myself, printed everything, it was picked up by UPS, then all the issues with US customs were ultimately solved by me and UPS. When there were additional fees, SpeedEx refused to pay them, and I once again had to solve them. I got my packages eventually (which contained all my worldly possessions, I might add), but USE THIS COMPANY AT YOUR OWN RISK.Read more
